Platinum, Gold, Diamond and Emerald Cluster Drop Earrings by Graff
An important pair of vintage drop earrings by Graff. Designed as an asymmetric double cluster of cushion-cut emeralds surrounded by pear- and marquise- shaped diamonds. Mounted in platinum and 18k yellow gold. Total diamond weight: 12.5 carats. Total emerald weight: 5 carats. Circa 1970s.
The name ‘emerald’ was not used in England until the 16th century and has its roots in Latin, ‘smaragdus’, and the later mediaeval; ‘esmerande’, ‘emerande’ and ‘esmeralde’. All of these names refer to the deep green colour of the stone.
