Sometimes known as the Modern Style, Art Nouveau (New Art) is a French term first used in ‘L’Art Moderne’, a Belgium arts journal. The term describes an international shift in artistic style during the turn of the 20th century.
Art Nouveau is used to describe a style in jewellery, as well as works of art, architecture and interior design.
The 1900 Universal Exposition in Paris was a celebration of the ‘new art’ style. Designers showcased a wide variety of objects which aimed to break down the hierarchy between ‘high’ and ‘low’ mediums and free creativity. The sinuous lines and eclectic geometry in Art Nouveau jewellery illustrates the movement’s liberal aims.
